In the early 1900s, homecomings began to be hosted. Beginning in colleges, homecoming was a big party to kick off the school year and the first football game of the season. High schools all over America have adopted this tradition, and they are all very different. Most schools partake in spirit weeks, pep assemblies, parades, royalty, a homecoming football game, and dance.
Although for some schools they take it up a notch. In many schools in the south, homecoming mums have become very popular. The mums we see continue to grow in size with each year, they are large necklace-like DIYs the students create. They are made with real chrysanthemums (which is where the name mum comes from) and are decorated with ribbons, glitter, stuffed animals, and more. The point of a mum is meant to be a token of affection or appreciation towards a certain person. Although the real purpose is to be able to show your personality in a creative way. Depending on the dedication each school has, the mums are bigger or they wear them to school for a week straight the week of homecoming.
Homecoming in Bonner Springs began in the early 1900s as well. It is always held in the early months of the school year, as a welcoming event for the year. All grade levels are encouraged to attend and be involved in the festivities that lead to the homecoming dance!
This year Bonner Springs High School’s homecoming dance will take place on Saturday, September 30th, with the big homecoming game on Friday the 29th. This past week has been filled with all the homecoming festivities. The theme this year is ‘Beachside Braves’, so each day of the week came with a different beach-themed dress-up day. The Student Council members have worked hard to meet the theme and make it as festive as possible. A parade, including the fall sports team and the royalty candidates, and a pep rally, including a DJ, inflatables, food trucks, and more were held before the football game Friday to get the fans excited! Which has been a BSHS tradition for a number of years. We hope to see you there!
