Each year the graduating class declares one day of the school year, senior skip day. Senior skip days have been a thing since the early 1900’s. It is a day that is agreed upon when all the seniors can gather and spend time together as a class. It gives the students a valid “excuse” to miss a day of school.
There has been no found origin for the senior tradition, however senior skip days began to become popular when the 80s film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was released. The film follows Ferris Bueller who skips school for the day; it inspired many senior skip days in the ’80s and ’90s. The tradition has continued to present-day seniors.
The skip day is most commonly planned the day before or following a big event during the school week. In the past, the day before homecoming or prom was common. This past Tuesday, the 31st, the 2023-2024 senior class decided to make the day their senior skip day. They planned the day of Halloween and before a planned day off, making an extended break for the seniors.
