While there are many reasons why themed spirit days in schools are positive, there are also many negative aspects. It creates added pressure in many students’ lives.
For many students, spirit days are difficult to participate in. For some children, they promote a sense of loneliness. Not all families have the ability to provide the clothing or accessories to fit the themes. It is a possibility for many students. Many schools attempt to create themes everyone can participate in, although it is challenging.
This is an example of a not one-size-fits-all experience, students who are struggling would not be able to participate in something that is meant to be enjoyable for students. Spirit days are meant to promote inclusion, although when students do not have the needed materials to participate, they do the opposite. The students may feel it creates a divide, due to their inability to dress up with their peers.
Being inclusive to students who may not have the resources, cultural differences, or different personal situations is important. Creating an environment where students feel comfortable showcasing their spirit in different ways besides theme days will help not create a challenging situation for students who want to participate but can not. Schools can instead promote alternative ways like organizing activities to show spirit.
Making sure we promote an environment in school where everyone feels included and valued no matter their circumstances will make school more enjoyable for everyone!
